PROHIBITED AND
RESTRICTED ITEMS

At EMR Express we have a responsibility to ensure that the materials we accept do not cause harm to the environment or the health and safety of our staff, customers and suppliers. To ensure that we honour this responsibility, we only accept materials in certain forms and from authorised sellers.

Prohibited items

The following materials are prohibited from being in any grade of scrap.

ASBESTOS

No item containing asbestos in any form will be accepted.

HAZARDOUS LIQUIDS OR GASES

Any item displaying the CHIP symbol or substance having hazardous properties e.g. Toxic, Harmful, Irritant, Corrosive, Highly Flammable etc. These items will not be accepted on site. Only exception permitted is Lead Acid Batteries which should not be hidden amongst loads.

MUNITIONS / EXPLOSIVES

Live munitions of any kind will not be accepted. Bullets, shells, explosives, cartridges etc.

PCBs

Items which have or are likely to contain PCBs must not be delivered. Equipment such as transformers must be accompanied with a certificate of analysis proving it does not contain PCBs.

RADIOACTIVE ITEMS

Any material emitting a detectable level of radiation will be refused entry to the site. For information on how to dispose of radioactive materials, please visit www.gov.uk/government/collections/radioactive-substances-regulation-for-non-nuclear-sites

REFRIGERANT LIQUIDS OR GASES

CFCs and Pentane used in equipment like fridges and freezers can only be received by Fridge Depollution facilities and will not be accepted on other sites. These items are only accepted at EMR Darlaston and EMR Willesden

SEALED PRESSURISED CONTAINERS

Items such as gas bottles, air receivers, aerosols pose a serious explosion risk and will not be accepted. Items with prior agreement can be accepted if they have been depressurised and punctured/cut in half prior to arrival on site.

RESTRICTED ITEMS

The following items are subject to restrictions and quality conditions.

Cable

Some cable may contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and as such analysis of the material will be required prior to acceptance.

In fragmentiser feed

(including light iron, white goods and End of Life Vehicles delivered for shredding)

  • All plant / vehicles must be fully depolluted having all fluids and battery removed. This includes oils, fuels, coolant, air-con, shock absorber fluid and airbags(deployed)
  • Fuel tanks should be removed or obviously split and drained of all fluids
  • LPG Gas conversions must be removed
  • All batteries including any for alarms systems must be removed
  • Tyres must be removed

Vehicles not complying with the above must be declared to the weighbridge as requiring depollution.

Tanks and drums

Tanks will not be accepted without prior agreement of the Site Manager and then only if they have been certified as having been cleaned and suitable for hot cutting.

Drums will only be accepted if they have the top of the drum removed / cut in half or compressed and are accompanied by a certificate of cleanliness or can be seen to be absolutely clean. Any evidence of contamination and the above items will be rejected.

Waste Electronic & Electrical Equipment (WEEE)

EMR Expess has restrictions on the type of WEEE which can be accepted. Checks must be completed prior to acceptance.
